St. Jerome, a Doctor and Father of the Church noted, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” St. Jerome (feast day is September 30) insists that all Christians are called to know the Truths of God and to recognize that serious Bible study is a necessity, not an optional luxury. In fact, St. Paul reiterates this by stating, “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” We should all readily agree that we do not wish to be ignorant of the power and wisdom of God. That must be a given if we wish to live our lives in such a way that we can journey in this life into the Eternal Life of Christ.
St. Jerome was born in 342 AD on the Adriatic Coast. He was ordained a priest, traveled to Rome and became the secretary to Pope Damasus from 382-385. Upon the pope’s death, Jerome traveled to Bethlehem and founded a monastery and dedicated himself to study and the translation of the Scriptures from the original languages into Latin. St. Jerome’s translation, known as the Vulgate, was used in the Latin rite of the Catholic Church for more than 1,000 years. His biblical scholarship was extraordinary and he remains one of the greatest Scripture scholars; St. Jerome is known as a Father and Doctor of the Catholic Church. He died in 420 AD.
